"Northern lights in Tromsø tonight: stay in town or drive inland?"

Check tonight's forecast for Tromsø, then the cloud. If the coast is cloudy, drive inland towards Skibotn. Over three winters of camera records, Skibotn saw clearly visible aurora on one in five nights when the Tromsø camera saw none.

Will I see the northern lights in Tromsø tonight?

Start with tonight's forecast for Tromsø, which updates every afternoon. Then look at the cloud. Tromsø is under the auroral oval, so there's aurora above the city on many nights, and the sky decides whether you see it. Over the last three winters, the camera in Tromsø recorded clearly visible aurora on about one night in three.

If the coast is under cloud, don't give up on the night. Drive inland.

Is it worth driving out of Tromsø to see the aurora?

Often, yes, and we can put a number on it. There's an all-sky camera in Tromsø and another in Skibotn, about 1.5 hours' drive south-east, on Storfjorden, the inner arm of Lyngenfjord. We compared the two cameras night by night, on the 527 nights both of them recorded from September to March in the winters 2023–24 to 2025–26.

  • The Tromsø camera saw clearly visible aurora on 30% of those nights.
  • The Skibotn camera saw it on 35%.
  • On nights when Tromsø saw nothing, Skibotn still saw it 20% of the time, one night in five.
  • With both cameras together, at least one of them saw aurora on 44% of nights.

That gap is mostly weather. Skibotn sits in the rain shadow of the Lyngen Alps, so it often stays clear when cloud rolls in off the sea over Tromsø. Going the other way works less often: Skibotn missed aurora that Tromsø saw on 9% of nights.

When should I stay in Tromsø?

Stay if tonight's forecast is Good or Excellent and the cloud forecast shows a clear or broken sky over the island. Get out of the streetlights, to Telegrafbukta, Prestvannet or across the bridge on Kvaløya, and you don't need to drive far.

Our forecast's labels have been checked against the cameras in Tromsø, Skibotn, Abisko and Kiruna over three winters (2023–26). Nights rated Excellent had clearly visible aurora 79% of the time, Good 63%, Possible 42% and Low 15%.

When should I drive towards Skibotn?

Drive if the activity is there but the coast is covered: a Good or Possible night, with low cloud forecast for Tromsø and a gap inland. Check the cloud forecast for Skibotn and Kilpisjärvi, on the Finnish border, before you set off, because the inland valleys aren't always clear either.

A few things we'd say to a friend:

  • Leave early. The E8 along Balsfjord and the E6 down to Storfjorden take time in winter, and the aurora doesn't wait for you.
  • Check the road. The E8 and E6 are open all winter but can close in storms. The Norwegian roads authority posts closures at vegvesen.no.
  • Don't stop on the road. Use car parks and lay-bys. Every winter people stop in the dark on narrow roads to take photos.
  • If you're not used to winter driving, take a tour. Tromsø's chase tours do exactly this drive, and the drivers know where the gaps are.

What's the best month to see the aurora from Tromsø?

Tromsø's airport had the clearest skies in December and January in our ten winters of data, and the camera saw aurora most often in January. September and March were the cloudiest months on the coast.

Does the moon matter tonight?

Less than people think. A bright moon washes out weak aurora but not a strong display. We checked moonlit camera frames by eye for our full moon post. Clouds are the bigger problem by far.

Aurora gives you the same Tonight number for wherever you're standing, in Tromsø or on the road to Skibotn, with the cloud forecast built in. A forecast, not a guarantee.
