What is the best month for the northern lights in Tromsø?
November to January gives you the best odds. These months have the longest darkness, up to 16 hours a night, and in ten winters of airport reports they had the most nights with a usable dark sky: 61–70%. On the all-sky camera near Tromsø, January stood out, with clearly visible aurora on 47% of nights (2023–2026). The season runs from early September to mid-April; the edges have shorter nights and more cloud.

- Camera saw aurora: share of nights the all-sky camera recorded clearly visible aurora, clouds included, 2023–24 to 2025–26 (UEC Tromsø AI dataset).
- Usable sky: share of nights with at least two dark hours free of low cloud at Tromsø Airport, 2016–2026.
- Dark hours: hours with the sun at least 12° below the horizon, around the 15th of the month.
With three winters of camera data, each month rests on 80–90 nights (September about 30), so a few active weeks can lift one month. Read the pattern, not the exact number. The live forecast and full data are on the Tromsø page.
Is September or October good in Tromsø?
Yes, if you accept more cloud. The nights are shorter (about 6 dark hours in mid-September, 11 in mid-October) and the coast is often wetter. In return, lakes and fjords are not yet frozen, so you can get reflections, and it is milder. Allow an extra night or two.
What about November to January and the polar night?
From late November to mid-January the sun doesn't rise in Tromsø. That means the longest darkness of the year, and you can see aurora in the afternoon as well as at night. December had the most usable nights at the airport (70%), and January was the strongest month on the camera.
Is February or March still worth it?
Yes. February still has about 12 dark hours, and March about 8, with lighter evenings and more daylight for other activities. In our camera data, February and March were a little weaker at Tromsø than the core winter. Inland Swedish Lapland tends to be clearer late in the season (see Abisko vs Tromsø).
Which weeks should you avoid?
- Around the full moon: a bright moon hides faint aurora. Our calendar on the Tromsø page shows moon-free dark hours for every night (see also the full-moon post).
- Mid-April to late August: it never gets dark enough in Tromsø.
How many nights should you book in Tromsø?
Four to five. With five nights in a row, the camera recorded aurora at least once 79% of the time over the three winters. More in how many nights do you need?.
How do you improve your odds in Tromsø?
Drive inland when the coast is cloudy. A camera at Skibotn, about 50 km to the east, recorded aurora on 42% of nights over the same winters, against 32% at Tromsø, mostly because of cloud. Check a local forecast in the afternoon, and give it the darkest hours. A forecast, not a guarantee.
